Workers 'have concerns about flexible working'

Many workers are not exercising their right to request flexible working due to concerns it will damage their career prospects, according to new research
The Flexible Working and Performance study of 3,500 employees was undertaken by charity Working Families in association with the Cranfield School of Management.
It discovered that 71 per cent of respondents had made informal flexible working arrangements, rather than making a formal request.
A large number of employees felt that operating remotely or on reduced hours could result in being excluded from career opportunities, according to the research.
Cranfield researchers said workers tended to be reluctant to formalise such arrangements for fear of negative effects on their career, which may be of note to graduates considering flexible opportunities.
"There was generally a belief among respondents that adopting flexible working practices could harm their careers," said the report. "Visibility was identified as a particular issue."
