Around half of small businesses find it difficult to control remote workers' performance, which may interest graduates looking at homeworking opportunities.
The IT skills for Flexible Working report by communications company BT revealed that 88 per cent of mangers have not received adequate training in how to manage home workers.
The report coincides with the imminent government review on extending the right to request flexible working conducted by Sainsbury's HR director Imelda Walsh, which is due for publication soon.
BT managing director Bill Murphy comments: "There is a worrying lack of both management and IT skills for 21st century flexible working, despite the growth in home working among small businesses."
In related news, research by Mother@Work, an online magazine for women at work, discovered that half of the 300 small and medium-sized enterprises it interviewed were in favour of the government's plan to extend the right to request flexible working.
