Fingerprint technology to monitor employees

News Article Published: Monday, 19 May 2008   Category: Workplace

Employers could soon be keeping a closer eye on staff at work – with the aid of fingerprint technology.

A pilot scheme carried out in six stores of the Budgens supermarket chain has been deemed a success, with two stores employing a total of 25 staff saving over £10,000 over 12 months, according to Personnel Today.

Savings were made through human resources savings and greater staff productivity.

The system, designed by technology firm Nivid, allows employers to guard against staff taking unauthorised breaks, leaving early or skiving off work altogether.

Nivid chief executive Pushpendra Jhala said it was envisaged the biometric technology would eventually replace traditional clocking on devices.

He said: "We have had enquiries from lots of retailers, and we are looking at other sectors such as offices and warehouses."

Biometrics is the science and technology of measuring personal biological data.
