Yorkshire firm aiming to manage local graduate placements

A recruitment expert has moved back to his roots in Yorkshire to help university leavers secure graduate jobs in the region.

Martin Edmondson spent six years working in London but decided to return to the north-west to take up the reins at Graduates Yorkshire, the Telegraph and Argus reports.

The organisation is aiming to increase the proportion of graduates who are employed in the county's public and private sector firms, which is currently among the lowest in the UK.

It is also determined to match candidates from the region's ten universities to companies based all over the country, including those offering graduate jobs in London.

Although a recent study by the Association of Graduate Recruiters suggested that there about 70 graduates chasing each vacancy, Mr Edmondson explained that the figures do not tell the whole story.

"More than 80 per cent of graduates find jobs with companies classed as small-to-medium sized enterprises, where graduate recruitment trends are more encouraging," he told the news provider.

"With record numbers of graduates leaving our universities this summer, we can't pretend it will be easy this year, but the majority of graduates willing to put in the effort will find a suitable vacancy."

Meanwhile, Dr Paul Sisson, a research fellow at the Institute of Employment Studies, claimed recently that the private sector will struggle to absorb public sector job cuts if they happen too quickly.
