'Work experience can provide real benefits for graduates'
Tuesday, 06 April 2010
Recent university leavers looking for work experience placements may be interested to hear about the experiences of a young student currently on a year's industrial placement with Tui UK and Ireland.
Katie Stone, 20, is currently working as an early trading assistant looking at pricing and trading for Tui's holiday business in Cyprus and Malta, the Guardian reports.
She said that working for the firm, which was the winner of the overall prize at the recent National Council for Work Experience awards, was a worthwhile activity.
Ms Stone told the paper: "I have been given responsibility for the trading strategy for my resorts and feel that I have a 'real' job. Support opportunities are terrific. Another great aspect is how students are involved in team building.
"Before I started my placement, I was unsure about what career I wanted to follow, but after my experience with Tui, I would definitely want to pursue a career in the tourism industry."
Work experience has recently come under scrutiny with some bodies claiming that students are exploited while on attachments.
