Women still underrepresented in the UK

News Article Published: Monday, 17 December 2007   Category: Science, IT and Engineering

Women in the science, engineering and technology industries are still being underrepresented in the UK, according to a new report.

The research, from the UK Resource Centre for Women (UKRC), shows that women make up only 24 per cent of workers in these industries.

Annette Williams, of JIVE, a partnership led by UKRC, told onrec.com: "These figures demonstrate that, whilst things are changing for the better, there is still a great deal of work to be done to actively encourage women into roles within these sectors, and to challenge the stereotypes and false perceptions that have acted as barriers to them."

Lithuania is the country where women are best represented, making up 43 per cent of workers in the science, engineering and technology industries. Austria is the worst place for women to go looking for jobs in the industries where the proportion of the sector that is female drops to 13.7 per cent.

UKRC provides information for women trying to get into science engineering and technology careers.
