Women in IT urged not to be 'one of the boys'

Published: Friday, 23 November 2007   Category: Science, IT and Engineering

Women working in IT jobs and trying to break into the sector have been encouraged not to try and be "one of the boys".

The comments were made at the "Aiming for the top – how to be a successful woman in IT" event hosted by womenintechnology.co.uk

Women currently only make up 20 per cent of people working in IT.

Maggie Berry, director of womenintechnology.co.uk said: "It's obvious that the technology profession is missing out on a wealth of female talent. While organisations obviously want to recruit the best employees regardless of gender, figures show that there are more women leaving the IT profession than joining it."

The event was organised for women, including women looking for graduate IT jobs, to be able to speak to women already in high positions within IT and for them to get advice on how to take their careers to the next level.

Meanwhile a report by insurer Legal and General has shown that one in three employees worry about workplace stress.
