Building work has begun on the University of Huddersfield’s new £27 million flagship development, with construction giants Morgan Sindall now on site.

The building, set to be based alongside the Shorehead roundabout, will house the School of Law alongside other aspects of the Schools of Music, Media and Humanities.

Plans for the development have been in place for months, but the arrival of the construction firm onto the site signals the start of the next phase of building.

The six-storey building will be adjacent to the Creative Arts Building and Student Central – the latest addition to the thriving Huddersfield campus.

GB Group Holdings had initially held the contract for the build but after entering financial difficulty, Morgan Sindall have taken on proceedings.

Part of the Queensgate campus, the new development will stand proud on one of the main roads in the city and was designed by architectural firm AHR.

More than £250 million has already been committed to improving the campus, while the latest work should be completed by the beginning of 2017.

It will mean that students at Huddersfield will have the opportunity to use a wealth of new facilities, enhancing their university experience and potentially aiding their development.

The foundation stone for the new building was laid by the Duke of York – now the Chancellor of the University – in March of this year, but progress was then held up.

Both Morgan Sindall and AHR architects have solid relationships with the university have completed a lot of previous work in the city.

The construction firm – ranked as one of the best in Britain – took an active role in refurbishing the Law and Humanities buildings and also has a contract for the development of the University’s Institute of Railway Research.

AHR meanwhile designed the Harold Wilson Building on campus and the refurbishments carried out on the West Building and the Ramsden Building.
