The University of Glasgow has announced it will be opening a new £10 million sports facility on its campus later this year, providing students with plenty of recreational and performance space.

The sports facility will open its doors in October 2015 with links to the existing Stevenson Building.

A new four-level facility

This four level facility will be made up of PowerPlay, Pulse, FanZone, and a new sports hall.
PowerPlay will feature a professional-grade lifting platform for high performance strength and conditioning training with a plyo-strip and a rebound wall that will be custom built.

The 732 square metre level named Pulse will be home to cardiovascular training equipment, including treadmills, bikes, cross trainers, rowing machines, stair climbers and bikes.

The new sports hall is also set to host basketball, badminton, volleyball and netball and will be used on occasions when the FanZone is being used by the university. Rows of removable seating are also set to be installed so that they can be “rolled away” depending on the event taking place in the hall.

The university’s commitment to sport

Euan Smith, Acting Director for University of Glasgow Sport, said the university is a world class, world changing university and this new £10 million extension demonstrates their “commitment to providing a world-class learning environment” for the students.

Both staff and students are extremely excited by the prospect of the new facility and by partnering with the world’s “finest suppliers” it can be assured that this facility is one of the best of its kind in the UK, he added.

Caitlin Kelly, Glasgow University Sports Association President, said that she is excited and proud to be a part of this new project which will boost student sport participation at the university.

By working alongside the likes of Life Fitness, ESP and Matrix Fitness, we can be sure to deliver “an incredible facility” providing students with the chance to be the best they can be, she added.
