University-leavers must 'present themselves' well hunting for graduate vacancies

Published: Thursday, 17 March 2011   Category: All Graduate job news

University-leavers looking for graduate vacancies must present themselves in a way that suits the job for which they are applying, particularly concerning transferable skills, according to a specialist recruitment body.

Dan Hawes, co-founder of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, said: "Depending on what graduates are looking for, it really depends on what graduates can bring and how they present themselves.

"Any degree will have transferable skills that will be useful to employers. It is all about how you introduce your case."

Mr Hawes added: "Graduates by their nature don't bring a lot of work experience with them to the job market. That's primarily what an employer wants - someone who has a commercial understanding and will also be able to apply that to a work environment."

In a recent speech, David Willetts, minister for universities and science, said that graduates need to be equipped with the right skills that employers value as well as the appropriate qualifications.
