Universities need the support of the government to ensure that they can continue to provide top-class facilities for the graduates of the future.
That is the view of Pam Tatlow, chief executive of million+, who suggested that the coalition's failure to provide guarantees against institutions collapsing is "troubling".
She explained that although most higher education leaders are confident that public sector cuts will not be immediately disastrous, a measure of reassurance from ministers would be welcome.
"I think what the sector needs most of all is an assurance from government ministers that they value their world-class system of universities," she said.
"It's that kind of assurance that I think would be very helpful in what is obviously a difficult financial time."
Ms Tatlow was speaking after a survey of university vice-chancellors by PA Consulting Group revealed that 74 per cent believe the cuts could ultimately lead to the fall of some institutions.
Million+ is a university thinktank which supplies the government and parliamentarians with the findings of its research reports and policy papers.
