Graduate recruitment levels have improved considerably so far this month, despite the slow pace of the economic recovery, it was claimed today (May 27th).
Mike Hill, chief executive of Graduate Prospects, suggested that the number of companies looking to fill positions at present is much higher than 12 months ago.
However, he also explained that firms will be inundated with applications as some university leavers who missed out last year enter the graduate job hunt once more.
"Last week, we had more adverts for graduate vacancies than we had for the whole of May 2009, and May 2010 overtook May 2008 figures last week," she said.
"It will remain competitive for the next few years as there is a backlog of people who didn't find jobs and maybe went into post-graduate education."
Mr Hill added that the finance, consultancy, retail and engineering sectors are performing strongly at present, but that the construction industry is not faring so well.
Graduate Prospects is the UK's official graduate careers support service and the commercial subsidiary of the Higher Education Careers Service Unit.
