British institutions offer some of the world’s best learning environments for fashion students, according to a brand new ranking.

Business of Fashion (BoF) has compiled the inaugural global list of leading undergraduate and graduate fashion courses and the UK dominates at the top.

Five of the ten best BA and MA programmes are based in the UK, with Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London the standout performer.

It ranked top for undergraduate programmes and second for masters degrees, beaten only by the Royal College of Art in the latter category.

Kingston University also performed well in the BA list, taking third place behind Tokyo’s Bunka Fashion College.

Parsons The New School for Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology – both based in New York – completed the top five for undergraduate programmes.

In total five US institutions featured among the ten best BA and MA programmes, meaning students have plenty of opportunities both the UK and the USA.

For MA programmes, The London College of Fashion was ranked fourth globally, with only the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp, preventing an all UK-based top three.

The rankings form part of efforts to provide insight into the fashion industry by BoF Education, an initiative helping to highlight potential career choices for the world’s fashion students.

More than 4,000 students were surveyed as part of the survey, alongside 88 human resources professionals and fashion influencers from around the globe.

The leading fashion schools in North America, Europe and Asia were all included, with programmes assessed on three main criteria:

Global influence
Learning experience
Long term value – how students are prepared for the world of work, including employment opportunities and graduation rates

More than a quarter of institutions in the top 20 best undergraduate programmes are found in the UK, with the University of Westminster (7th), the London College of Fashion (8th), Nottingham Trent University (14th) and the University of Creative Arts (17th) all featuring.

It means UK institutions have outperformed both those in the US and those from traditional areas of fashion strength such as Italy.
