Those looking for graduate opportunities should head to 'boosted' airport retailers

Published: Friday, 11 February 2011   Category: Retail

University leavers looking for graduate opportunities in retail should try applying at shops based in airports, after an analyst said this sector could lead the economic recovery.

Verdict, a company which conducts research on the retail sector, announced yesterday (February 10th) that the global airport retail market could become one of the best-performing in the economic sector.

Last year, this section of the retail economy achieved a growth of 8.4 per cent, after slumping 5.1 per cent in 2009, due to the economic downturn.

Anne Marie Davis, an analyst at Verdict, said that cheaper holidays mean people are spending more money in the airport before or after they travel.

"Air travel [has been made] more affordable to the expanding young urban population in the Asia Pacific region," she said.

"This combined with ambitious investment in new infrastructure has helped increase footfall in the region and therefore boost retail sales."

More people flew from London Heathrow in January, compared to last year, suggesting more people will use airport retailers. The airport recorded a passenger increase of 4.6 per cent in January 2010.
