The Sky is the limit

Published: Saturday, 26 December 2015   Category: All Graduate Jobs News

University of Central Lancashire graduate Rory O’Callaghan has landed his dream job with Sky Sports News, just a week after graduating.

The 24-year-old, who accepted his MA in Sports Journalism only a matter of days ago at Preston’s Guild Hall, has proven the sky really is the limit.

Chorley-born Rory said: “Sports journalism is very competitive industry so I’m really pleased to have secured a freelance role so soon after graduating. I’m hoping to showcase my skills to the full and make the most of it because it’s a fantastic opportunity.”

The UCLan graduate took on some freelance work whilst studying, writing about football and cricket for the Liverpool Echo newspaper. He believes this experience to be invaluable and is to be one of the reasons he gained the skills required to work with Sky Sports News.

Rory revealed that he had to balance the demands of the role with the requirements of his course as there often much overlap, requiring him to prioritise parts of his workload. He believes his role at the Echo directly led to him gaining employment at Sky Sports. Work experience taught Rory to make the most of any opportunities offered to him whilst at University and he commends the UCLan course.

His lecturer Charlie Lambert, who once worked as a sports journalist for TV giant, the BBC, added: “This is a very competitive place to get into and he has done incredibly well to nail paid work so soon.”

Rory is one of two journalists in his family. His sister Lauren also graduated with an MA in Magazine Journalism at UCLan in 2011. She then went on to accept a place on the highly sought after IPC Media Editorial Multimedia Graduate Scheme. Rory is certainly following in her footsteps.

The graduate added that he wanted to secure employment at a national media organisation during the course and is thankful for the opportunity to prove himself.
