Temping could appeal more to graduates

Temping could soon to become a more attractive option for graduates as new regulations for temporary workers come into force in 2011.

According to the Association of Recruitment Consultants (ARC), the introduction of the Agency Workers Regulations next year will make agency work more viable as an alternative to permanent employment.

Adrian Marlowe, chairman of the ARC, stressed that the new regulations will level the playing field in terms of equal pay and conditions and making it mandatory for hiring organisations to be committed to fair working practices.

A boost in temporary workers would also benefit firms that rely on non-permanent staff during the Christmas shopping rush.

"It's perfectly normal for the organisations that provide these products to use the agency market to obtain the help that they need," Mr Marlowe said.

He added that one of the considerable benefits of having a flexible workforce in the UK is that hirers can rely on the availability of agency workers to fill their staffing gaps.

A recent survey conducted by de Poel found that 69 per cent of firms expect a dearth of workers over the Christmas period.
