Students given career boost with placements at top energy port

Four students from Pembrokeshire have enjoyed a month-long work placement at Port of Milford Haven, the UK’s top energy port.

As part of the port’s annual scholarship scheme, four students were successful in securing £1,500 towards their studies, alongside the opportunity to experience a diverse range of activities.

Each of the students got to experience activities suited to their own careers, with one who studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Portsmouth able to spend time working on navigational aids as part of the engineering division.

Another, who is studying chemistry, was able to work on a smart grid system, while geography graduate Guto Harries was allowed to work alongside the environmental department to learn how the port operates in terms of conservation.

The final student, in her final year at the Royal College of Music, was allowed to work with the marketing team looking at the Milford Waterfront Development.

Unique insight into working life

All of the placements allowed the students to gain a unique insight into the working environment, whilst experiencing life on real projects in pressurised situations.

According to Mr Harries, the placement was vital in preparing him for the future and has provided him with vital experience that will help going forward.

The initiative has been going for thirteen years, although the placements were only introduced in 2010.

On the final day of their placements, all four students led presentations on what they had learnt, while their input will also be used by the port to develop the scheme in the future.

Anna Malloy, PR and Communications Manager at the Port of Milford Haven, who oversees the scheme, has praised the standard of applications for the initiative from local students and also how well the four students integrated themselves into the business.

Next year’s scholarship scheme is set to launch in October this year, with applications accepted online.
