Those looking for graduate jobs in civil engineering will find that a relevant degree is just one of the characteristics they need, according to one expert.
Speaking to the Guardian, Karen Wallbridge, head of recruitment at engineering consultancy Atkins, explained that people will also need to be self-motivated and have good communication skills.
Ms Wallbridge said: "The latter is critical as our business is a consultancy and you need to articulate and engage with customers and colleagues."
The ability to work in a team is also vital as people need to be able to co-operate with a wide variety of people, she added.
Once people have secured a job with the firm, it will help them develop these soft skills even further, Ms Wallbridge stated.
Meanwhile, Anne Fairweather, head of public policy at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, has claimed that it is business as usual in the public sector graduates jobs market.
