Ropes & Gray confirms London graduate placement plans

Published: Wednesday, 18 August 2010   Category: Law

A prominent US legal firm has announced that it is set to create graduate vacancies in London next year.

Ropes & Gray has traditionally relied upon lateral hires for its strategy in the UK capital, but it is now seeking a different approach as it aims to boost its presence in the country.

The company has already held talks with the Law Society and a number of major universities to inform them of its plans to implement a formal graduate recruitment process.

"We have undertaken some of the initial legwork, but it is a long drawn-out process and it will take a while until the recruitment becomes integral to the firm," joint London office head Mike Goetz told LegalWeek.com.

"Luckily we are able to build on our fantastic reputation in the States in order to make sure we have access to a large talent pool."

The company is initially planning to house about 40 lawyers at 5 New Street Square, which is the new permanent office space it purchased in London in January 2009.

Ropes & Gray also has offices in Boston, New York, Palo Alto, San Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago, Hong Kong and Tokyo.
