Retail 'bolsters graduate jobs market'

Published: Thursday, 25 November 2010   Category: Retail

Retail plays an important role in creating jobs for graduates, it has been suggested.

According to the British Retail Consortium, the new opportunities generated by the retail sector could help offset the effect of public sector job cuts on graduate vacancies.

Stephen Robertson, director general of the British Retail Consortium, said the retail sector plays a crucial role in maintaining and creating vital new employment opportunities for those seeking them.

According to analysis from the British Retail Consortium-Bond Pearce Retail Employment Monitor, the retail industry has created an extra 12,750 full-time jobs over the last 12 months - a 2.1 per cent increase on the previous year.

Richard Hyman, strategic retail advisor to Deloitte, said 2010 has thus far been a "remarkable" year for the retail industry in the UK.

"The industry bucked most forecasts for 2010 and whilst retail sales for the whole year will be broadly flat, in the context of the wider economic environment this is a tremendous outcome," he added.

Deloitte predicts that the value of retail spending in the UK will increase by one per cent this year.
