Redditch set to open £1.5 million engineering centre of excellence

Published: Thursday, 02 June 2016   Category: All Graduate Jobs News

A new £1.5 million engineering centre of excellence is set to be open to try and meet the high demand for apprentices in Redditch.

The significant investment is set to increase the number of skilled engineering apprentices within Worcestershire, with the centre set to train up to 200 young apprentice engineers over the next four years.

Midland Group Training Services (MGTS), who are a specialist training provider, will run the centre as well as providing facilities to ensure those in the area can be trained to provide engineering skills to local companies in need of trained workers.

Demand for skills

The latest project joins on to the scheme in which post graduate placements from Birmingham University are organised into Redditch companies.

Redditch has been eager to create an engineering academy and skill centre to be able to provide young people in the area with skills and ensure those that graduate are put in a position where they will be able to command a full-time role.

Karen Lumley, a Redditch MP, believes the engineering apprenticeship will be able to provide the vital skills that employers within the area need and have been requiring for a long period.

Funding for the centre

The centre has been made possible, largely due to a private and public sector collaboration with MGTS investing £800,000 and both Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership (WLEP) and Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnerships (GBSLEP) investing £350,000 each through the Government’s Growth Deals.

MGTS seeks to deliver training that is relevant and as close to the real world of work as possible, so as to make the transition between training and employment easier.

The company has worked closely with companies to make sure anyone that is trained has the skills and attitude that employers need in order to fill available roles.
