Recruitment challenge 'posed by Generation Y'

A new study has indicated that today's generation of school-leavers and graduates known as Generation Y present something of a recruitment challenge for employers.

Surveying global business leaders on the issues of talent and recruitment, the Stepstone Total Talent report 2008 revealed that many enterprises could be insufficiently prepared for the challenges presented by the 'internet generation'.

Commenting on the findings, Colin Tenwick, chief executive officer of Stepstone, said: "In recruitment terms, this means that the traditional printed job advertisement can't be guaranteed to reach this demographic. The way they look for a job is ultimately very different."

Additionally, Generation Y is more demanding in terms of what it expects from employment opportunities.

Mr Tenwick notes that Generation Y is entering the workforce with "higher expectations" of what employers promise, not only in career development, but also in their "ethics and values".
