Poundland to offer graduate jobs in 2010
Tuesday, 12 January 2010
Graduate job hunters may be able to secure positions at retail outlet Poundland in the coming year, with the company expecting to open a store a week in 2010.
Speaking to Reuters, chief executive Jim McCarthy revealed that the company was currently celebrating strong sales over the Christmas period.
During the five-week period that terminated on January 3rd, Poundland reaped the rewards of festive spending by witnessing a rise in sales of 4.4 per cent in comparison to the same period 12 months earlier.
Mr McCarthy highlighted that the increase in stores will still take place, despite expectations that spending will slump in the coming year as customers get to grips with rising taxes and cutting debt.
He told the news agency: "We'll probably add another 50 [shops] next [fiscal] year."
Sainsbury's graduate recruitment manager Jo Gidley remarked last year that rising numbers of university leavers are considering careers in the retail sector.
A chief reason noted for this field being an attractive proposition was the high level of promotion opportunities.
