'Positive outlook' for grad jobs over next decade

Job opportunities are set to emerge in sectors such as business, education, distribution and transport over the next decade, a new report indicates.

According to Working Futures, a publication from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, the employment outlook for the UK remains positive through to 2017, despite the current economic downturn.

Skills secretary John Denham expressed delight at the report, which he said came as a boost to the government as it seeks to prepare the UK workforce for the upturn when it comes.

He added: "In the short term we are making sure that people who lose their jobs have access to the real help they need.

"But we must not lose sight of the future needs of our economy and do all we can to help people get the secure career jobs they want and need in the industries where growth will be the strongest in the coming years."

Recently published official figures indicated that the employment rate fell in England and Wales during the third quarter of 2008.
