People looking for graduate vacancies should be 'mindful of their competencies'

Published: Monday, 11 April 2011   Category: All Graduate job news

Candidates looking for graduate roles must ensure the roles they are applying for match their skills to a sufficient degree, a media recruitment firm has advised.

Dominic Warman, head of marketing at Handle, warned that candidates must be "mindful" of their competencies and should ask themselves whether they have the right stuff for specific roles.

"A lot of people are still applying for roles that they don't have too much of a chance of getting, because it's too much of a stretch. It's not that kind of market anymore," he said.

"Companies are being a lot more cautious about who they hire, and are doing more thorough interview processes."

Last week, the Higher Education Careers Services Unit (HECSU) advised that people looking for graduate vacancies should start the preparations for the applications "very, very early" on in the process.

Charlie Ball, the deputy director of research for HECSU, warned that competition for roles is "quite severe".
