People looking for graduate opportunities in the private sector must show 'commercial acumen'

University-leavers looking from graduate roles in the private sector need to show they have "commercial acumen", according to Hays.

Mark Staniland, the managing director of career transition at the specialist recruitment firm, said that people who are looking for private sector jobs must be aware of speaking "a completely different language".

The executive was speaking in response to a report by thinktank New Economics Foundation (NEF), who said that competition for private sector jobs - including the graduate opportunities it offers - is likely to be high.

"It's essential candidates show they understand how the private sector works, make their experience relevant and demonstrate commercial acumen," he said.

"There are more similarities between the two sectors than people think, but job seekers need to be able to work hard to show how this is the case."

The NEF report, released on March 31st, also revealed that the incoming public sector cuts could see a shortfall of jobs numbering around 520,000.
