Outlook in retail good for graduates
Thursday, 15 April 2010
Recent university leavers looking for graduate jobs in retail have been handed a boost with the news that a barbeque summer is expected to massively benefit the sector, according to the Centre for Retail Research (CRR).
Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR, said that a newfound confidence amongst consumers would be helped along by the predicted summer sun, enabling retail sales to deal with uncertainty over the general election.
He added: "I think the key impact on retail sales is the fact that the sun is shining, people are feeling a lot more confident, the world didn't end last year and so [people] will carry on shopping.
"I think there will be a general election effect but that it will actually be quite small compared to the impact of there being no more snow, warm evenings and the fact that you can have some people round for a beer and a barbecue."
Retail sale values rose 4.4 per cent year-on-year in March, according to figures from the British Retail Consortium and KPMG's Retail Sales Monitor.
