Offshore wind sector to employ 230,000 by 2050

It is very likely that graduate opportunities will appear in the green energy sector over the coming decades, after it was announced that the offshore wind industry is to create thousands of jobs.

The Carbon Trust - an independent body set up by the UK Government to promote low-carbon technology - has announced the outcome of research that has revealed offshore wind sector could be employing 230,000 people by 2050.

Benj Sykes, director of innovations at the Carbon Trust, said that the importance of the sector to the United Kingdom's economy cannot be overstated.

"This analysis confirms that offshore wind is a strategically important economic asset for the UK that can deliver long term growth and energy security," he said. "The economic prize for the UK economy is vast and we have to grab it now."

The research also found that the industry has the ability to grow by up to ten per cent every year.

Ian Byrne, deputy director of the National Energy Foundation (NEF), has recently announced that the number of green jobs in the UK is growing.
