Number of people going for graduate vacancies hits all-time high

Published: Wednesday, 18 May 2011   Category: All Graduate job news

The number of people applying for graduate vacancies has hit an unprecedented level this year, with 343,000 university-leavers going for the roles.

That is according to new figures released by High Fliers Research, a company that specialises in research of the graduate jobs market. It revealed that the number of applicants this year was up by a third.

Martin Birchall, managing director of research company, warned that the huge numbers of applicants necessarily means that many will be disappointed.

"Although students' confidence in the graduate employment market is definitely improving, there still isn't anything like enough entry-level jobs," he said.

"[This] means that tens of thousands of well-qualified graduates from the class of 2011 may well find themselves without work this autumn."

The graduate research company also revealed that more people are applying early, in hopes they will get the spots, with 59 per cent of students applying by March.
