Northumbria University celebrated its 60th anniversary of fashion design at the Graduate Fashion Week this year after six decades of producing highly skilled design graduates.

Graduate Fashion Week, which was founded in 1991, offers students the opportunity to showcase their work and designs to a range of industry professionals.

The university showed off a number of graduate collections from the 1960s, 70s and 90s with themes from the latter including pedal pusher jeans which contrasted beautifully against black and white images depicting 60s couture fashion.

An impressive alumni of fashion designers

Final year students from Fashion BA (Hons), Fashion Design and Marketing BA (Hons) and Fashion Communications BA (Hons) were recognised for their fantastic achievements at the event and were even shortlisted for a range of awards alongside 20 other students.

With over 100 fashion students graduating from Northumbria University this July, the great list of alumni who have had their collections captured by award-winning photographers continues to grow.

In fact, Northumbria University’s fashion alumni is comprised of a number of impressive names including individuals who work for brands such as Alexander McQueen, Nike and Ralph Lauren.

A reason to celebrate

Chris Moore, Iconic Photographer and Honorary Graduate, said that the university’s reputation in the fashion industry is extremely high and it is an honour to be a part of their 60 year celebrations.

Kristen Pickering, Programme Leader of Fashion at the university, said that the reputation of the course continues to grow and means there is plenty to celebrate.

Everyone had a fantastic time at Graduate Fashion Week with visitors continuing to comment on the quality of the manufacturing, she concluded.
