Newcastle company goes for graduates

Published: Tuesday, 15 January 2008   Category: Graduate Job sector Reports

Although there is a shortage of skilled staff in the shipbuilding and offshore construction industries, a company based in Newcastle is attempting to solve the crisis through its graduate recruitment scheme.

The CD Group started the scheme 18 months ago and more than a dozen graduates have now been employed by the company through it.

Peter Douglass, group managing director, provided a warning to the industry: "Staff numbers have now risen to 150, but even these numbers will not suffice if we wish to fully service the opportunities open to us in the marine and offshore sector today."

The company has formed strong ties with the local universities in order to keep up the supply of qualified engineers and to give young engineers in the region a chance to start their careers at the firm.

CDA and CD Group offer work experience to students from Newcastle University as well.
