New employment figures are a 'step in the right direction'

The government's employment has said that the rise in employment numbers are a "step in the right direction" for the UK recovery.

On Wednesday, the Office for National Statistics released the latest employment figures, which show a rise of 143,000 of people in employment, which included many in graduate roles.

Mr Grayling praised the private sector for providing the impetus for the rise in employment and the possibility for growth.

"These figures are another step in the right direction, it's good news to see a rise in the number of full time jobs in the private sector and the fall in unemployment is welcome," he said.

"However, there are challenges ahead and our priority is to continue to support the economy, by reducing the deficit and putting in place measures to encourage growth in the private sector."

Prior to last year's general election, Mr Grayling - then shadow home secretary - found himself in the news after siding with two bed and breakfast owners who would not allow a homosexual couple stay in their establishment.
