MP calls for graduate internships

Published: Thursday, 14 May 2009   Category: Work Experience

Calls have been made for employers to offer more graduate internships to those leaving university this summer.

John Denham MP, of the Department for Innovation, University and Skills (DIUS) told a conference of graduate employers to sign up to a new government scheme, which helps degree-holders improve their employability by matching them with businesses.

The Graduate Talent Pool was promoted at the Employer Conference organised by the DIUS, and Mr Denham advised how internships can benefit both graduates and businesses.

He said: "Putting employers in touch with graduates is good for business but internships also benefit graduates, giving them transferable work experience and allowing them to try their hand at a potential career path and prove themselves to prospective employer."

The Higher Education Funding Council for England recently announced million-pound grants to help universities set up links with businesses to provide more graduate internships for their students.
