More private sector vacancies for graduate jobs in January?

People looking for graduate jobs may have found more opportunities in January, as new figures suggest that the month witnessed an increase in job vacancies.

A monthly analysis of more than 100,000 job opportunities across 8,000 recruiters revealed that job demand stood at an index of 113 in this month, up from a base-line level of 100 during December 2009.

The research, by Reed, revealed sustained growth across the private sector, although there were fewer opportunities in the public sector and in health and medicine.

It also indicated that salary growth remains muted, with the wage index at 99 in January 2011, down from 11 in December 2009.

"UK employers seem to be in job-creation mode, according to the latest Reed Job Index, with 13 per cent more jobs on offer now than 13 months ago," said Martin Warnes, managing director of reed.

"Employers right across the private sector are confident enough to recruit new staff, and flat salaries make this a good time for them to attract the talented people they need."
