Midlands employment initiative to increase graduate scheme places

Published: Thursday, 25 November 2010   Category: All Graduate job news | Marketing

An initiative in the Midlands has revealed that it will be increasing the number of graduate schemes it fills next year.

B-Hive, which is run by Pitch Consultants and Business Birmingham, is set to offer 30 paid placements, up by seven from 2010 levels, and 120 weeks' worth of work experience.

Students must go through a Dragons' Den style interview process to secure a spot in one of the five entry categories, which are marketing, PR, advertising, graphic design and web design.

"A challenging economic climate has led to increased competition across job markets," commented Ollie Purdom, director of Pitch Consultants.

"Employers are looking for a track record of experience and work experience placements are now more important than ever in helping graduates showcase the qualities they can bring to companies."

B-Hive is viewed as an ideal route into some of the biggest companies in Birmingham, with five of its finalists gaining permanent positions since it was established in 2009.

Meanwhile, the British Retail Consortium claimed this week that opportunities created by the retail sector could help offset the effect of public sector job cuts on graduate vacancies.
