Leading graduate retail employer bidding for further Scottish expansion
Tuesday, 26 June 2007
One of the UK's leading graduate retail employers has announced plans for continued expansion in the Scottish market as it looks to add to its growing global presence.
German-based Aldi currently has 29 stores in Scotland, along with more than 6,000 worldwide, and has now announced plans for a further four as part of a £400 million investment in the country.
That will see the firm open its first city centre store in Scotland, after obtaining a 1,000 sq m unit on Glasgow's high street, as well as new store on Eastfield Drive on Penicuik.
Furthermore, the company has now announced it has submitted planning applications for two new stores in Edinburgh, one in Chesser and the other set for Commercial Street.
Markus Beher, Aldi managing director for Scotland, reflected that Edinburgh had been a long-term priority for the firm: "Edinburgh has been our focus, but it has not been easy to find sites. We have been desperate to get into the city, but because we need 1.5-acre sites with 80 car park spaces, it has been difficult," he told the Scotsman.
"Edinburgh is very condensed in comparison to Glasgow."
Aldi is commonly ranked among the top ten graduate retail employers in the UK, gaining recognition for its fast-track management opportunities.
