John Lewis launches IT apprenticeships to boost digital skills

Published: Tuesday, 08 March 2016   Category: All Graduate Jobs News

John Lewis is going to provide students with on-the-job training in the company’s IT department through a four-year IT degree apprenticeship.

The scheme was created in combination with The Tech Partnership, and will offer eight students who have completed their A-levels a place while they study for a degree in Digital and Technology Solutions at education partner Queen Mary University of London.

Students will be paid a salary starting at £16,000 and rising each year based on performance, while there will be no tuition fees meaning students will not rack up any education-related debt.

Partnerships between the business and academic world to build IT skills are part of the Government’s ambition for the private sector to take a leading role in boosting digital skills.

Opportunities in several different areas

The apprentices will have the opportunity to work in several different areas of the IT department to develop specialist technical skills.

Opportunities will be presented to work across the Partnership IT team, on applications or infrastructure development, coding and issue resolution, before the students decide on what technical aspects to specialise in.

They will spend three days a week in the IT department at John Lewis’ head office in London and the other two days at Queen Mary.

Benefit for John Lewis

These ‘degree apprenticeships’ are thought to be the ideal way for John Lewis to find, attract and develop their future IT and digital partners whilst also providing young people with the chance to enhance their skills, while learning and earning at the same time.

It is expected that they will also bring more digital skills into the world of retail, given that technology plays a major role in driving growth in the sector.

Each candidate will get a full BSc degree for completing the programme and have the opportunity to progress with an IT career at John Lewis.
