Internship graduate placements 'exploiting young Britons'

Published: Friday, 03 September 2010   Category: Work Experience

Young Britons feel that they are being exploited by companies offering graduate work experience, it has been suggested.

PRWeek spoke to a number of recent university leavers who are working for agencies for free to hear their views on the state of the jobs market at present.

According to the news provider, an increasing number of individuals are willing to sign up to unpaid internships with such agencies in order to get their foot in the door.

One current PR intern said: "If I had asked for money with the placement I am doing, I am guessing that I would not have been picked.

"There are people interested in the same role who would have done it for free."

Responding to the findings, Francis Ingham, head of the Public Relations Consultants' Association, told PRWeek that companies should not use this trend as an excuse to treat graduates like "cannon fodder".

Meanwhile, an article published by HR Magazine earlier this week urged businesses to take their responsibilities seriously in relation to offering work experience placements.
