Ground-breaking university programme to create over 500 new jobs

A ground-breaking Falmouth University programme called Launchpad is set to bring over 500 new jobs to Cornwall following a £12 million funding boost.

The university has created a unique business incubation programme and the additional funding is set to create a number of jobs in the area.

Launchpad, which has been developed by Professor Anne Carlisle, vice-chancellor and chief executive of Falmouth University and director of the Falmouth Business School, has been given investment from the European Regional Development Fund and other local partners.

Create the right environment

The programme has been designed to create the right environment for start-up businesses in Cornwall, creating high-value jobs and also attract investment in the growing digital and technology sector.

The UK Government has recently given the go ahead to the project and has committed to funding for it even after Britain leaves the EU.

One of the main reasons behind the creation of the programme is that a lot of graduate businesses fail to reach high levels of growth. The programme offers support – although the start-up must remain in Cornwall.

During the pilot phase of the programme, industry partners including Sony and Amazon worked with Launchpad graduates to set up high-growth start-ups built to market opportunities.

Retain talented graduates

Professor Carlisle is a firm believer that if Cornwall is to grow then it needs to retain talented graduates within the county.

She said: “Launchpad has the potential to transform the economy of Cornwall. Creating jobs and businesses in high-growth sectors will provide a pipeline of talent, helping the county become a hub of creativity and innovation.”

The majority (£10 million) of the funding is coming from the ERDF, whilst Cornwall Council is set to provide £2 million to help the county achieve its economic growth.

Launchpad is set to tap into the quick growth in the digital sector – which is worth £118bn to the UK economy.
