The introduction of the government's Green Deal could lead to increased job creation - likely to include graduate roles - in the construction sector, according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).
Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the FMB, said that the number of new jobs in the sector remains "not very positive", but added that the Green Deal creates a "possible hope" that staffing levels will improve in the future.
"There is a skills gap … if we are going to deliver the Green Deal, but how we create that demand still hasn't been worked out. Hopefully next year we will see an uptake in the demand for retrofit skills," he said.
Mr Berry's comments follow a report from Wilkins Kennedy showing that there was a 19 per cent increase in the number of construction businesses going bankrupt in the first quarter of 2011 compared to the previous three months.
