'Graduates should be braced for job cuts'

Published: Wednesday, 21 April 2010   Category: Public sector

Recent university leavers looking for jobs in the public sector may be interested to hear the views of an employment expert who has claimed that jobs cuts in the sector are inevitable.

Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK, said that even though job cuts were inevitable, he thought the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)'s estimate that 500,000 public sector jobs would be lost over the next five years was wrong.

He added: "Whoever gets into power post May 6th, it is inevitable that these cuts will come into force and that jobs will be lost."

"I guess the key is how quickly. My feelings are that is it inevitable that these job cuts will come. I wouldn't agree that it could be up to half a million. I think that is excessive."

Mr Flaxton's comments come in the wake of the CIPD saying that it thought there is likely to be a ten per cent reduction in the core public workforce following the May 6th general election.
