Graduates have been given the chance to experience life working at North Lincolnshire Council in a bid to help them secure employment.

The paid summer graduate and undergraduate placement programme is just one of a number of schemes by the local authority to support people getting into employment.

The aim of the programme is to provide invaluable work experience that enhances the career prospects of young people in the North Lincolnshire area.

With placements taking place over the course of the summer, they also provide a stop-gap for young people during the summer holidays.

Decide on a career path

In total, 21 graduates were taken on to work at the council for a minimum of six weeks in a wide range of sectors, including highways, health trainer service, adult services and HR.

Those accepted for the placements were asked to attend a speed networking event, where they met their managers and were placed in roles that best suited their abilities are skills.

The scheme has helped to develop graduate’s CV’s and has aided those who were struggling to decide on where to take their career.

Councillor Rob Waltham, Cabinet member for Business, Innovation, Employment and Skills, said: "The graduates have been placed in a range of council services to gain valuable experience by getting involved in a range of projects and tasks. We offer young people real hands-on experience that they can take away with them to help progress in the future."

A number of schemes

North Lincolnshire Council is eager to try and improve the job prospects of young people and the graduate work experience scheme. Two people from its apprenticeship scheme are taken on into full time employment every year.

In addition, the council has also been supporting young people between the ages of 18 and 24 with work experience opportunities through its Government Wage Incentive Scheme. Those who are unemployed and have been claiming job seekers allowance for over six months are able to apply.

More than 85% of those who have passed through the scheme offered by the council have gone on to secure sustainable employment or training.
