Graduates could see their job prospects in the environment sector improve after the editor of a leading green magazine predicted strong growth in the area.
James Murray, editor of BusinessGreen.com, said that increased demand from businesses and consumers for green technology is driving the need for more workers in the sector.
He said: "It is definitely a growth area. If you talk to some of the people in this area it is one of the few sectors where there are skills shortages where the demand for jobs outstrips the supply of skilled workers."
Mr Murray suggested that obtaining or possessing the necessary skills to work in the green industry would put graduates in a "fairly strong position in the jobs market".
If the environmental sector is to grow it will rely on small to medium enterprises (SMEs) adopting green practices, yet a survey conducted last year showed 58 per cent of SME owners would only 'go green' if the products were made cheaper.
