Recent university leavers looking for the latest graduate jobs and courses may be interested to hear that in the wake of Tesco's announcement of annual pre-tax profits of £3.176 billion, the firm has pledged to create 9,000 new jobs in the UK.
The profits of the group increased by ten per cent on the previous 12 months and their UK sales growth is running ahead of the industry, evident in the fact that 18 per cent more UK households were redeeming Clubcard vouchers than a year ago.
Terry Leahy, chief executive of the chain, said: "By remaining focused on our strategy Tesco has weathered the economic storm well. Across the group, we have successfully adapted our cost structures and ranges to help customers save money.
"Our positions in international markets and non-food meant we faced strong headwinds when the downturn came but it will be these parts of our business which will grow fastest as the recovery strengthens."
In addition to the 9,000 jobs in the UK the firm is also hoping to create another 7,000 in its international locations.
