Graduate scheme hunters 'could do worse' than work at a call centre

Published: Monday, 27 September 2010   Category: All Graduate job news

Graduate placement hunters should not think twice about accepting a job at a call centre if they need work, it has been suggested.

Last week, a report by Hays Contact Centres and the Top 50 Call Centres for Customer Service initiative found that 43 per cent of call centres have seen a rise in graduate applications in the past 12 months.

Tanya de Grunwald, founder of GraduateFog.co.uk, explained that with 70 candidates for every graduate job at present, it is inevitable that university leavers have had to broaden their search.

However, she also noted that working in a call centre could offer a valuable filler while individuals look for positions which are more in line with their longer-term career goals.

"Employers view all experience as good experience plus at least you're learning transferrable skills and your phone manner should be top-notch when you leave to go on to your next job," she said.

The Hays Contact Centre and Top 50 Call Centres for Customer Service report also found that 35 per cent of all call centre workers are educated to degree level, compared to 25 per cent in 2009.
