Graduate roles to grow as SMEs expand?

Published: Wednesday, 26 January 2011   Category: All Graduate job news

Graduate roles may soon be opening up in small businesses around the United Kingdom and the world, a new survey has found.

That is because - according to the latest HSBC Global Small Business Confidence Monitor - 40 per cent of small firms are looking to 'go international' by 2013, a testament to the tenacity of the businesses in a recession.

The survey, of more than 6,000 small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), revealed that 20 per cent of UK-based SMEs are currently trading internationally.

Noel Quinn, HSBC head of commercial banking in the UK, said that the potential growth for companies in emerging markets is huge.

"We're seeing 'thinking' businesses approach this shift [to multinationalism] with optimism, using it as an opportunity to innovate and cash in on the creativity, strong heritage and knowledge-intensive base Britain is renowned for," he said.

The poll also revealed that 39 per cent of SMEs not yet undertaking international business said the main reason was lack of knowledge or international connections.
