Graduate jobs market 'opening up' for those with geography degrees

Published: Friday, 03 December 2010   Category: All Graduate job news

The future is bright for Britons looking to find graduate opportunities after completing geography-related degrees, it was suggested yesterday (December 2nd).

Figures published recently by the Higher Education Careers Services Unit claimed that 8.9 per cent of last year's graduates were still unemployed six months after leaving university.

However, writing for the Independent, Richard Garner noted that the unemployment rate for those with geography qualifications is markedly lower at 7.4 per cent.

He explained that geography is now increasing in importance in the eyes of academia as the world struggles to move towards a greener economy amid the threat of climate change.

"The world may be becoming [geography graduates'] oyster as more and more companies see the virtue of having a green eye on board to advise them on environmental hazards," he wrote.

Meanwhile, Ian Robertson, chief executive of the National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship, recently urged universities to continue supporting students who plan to set up their own businesses when they graduate.
