Graduate jobs likely in purchasing and supply market

Published: Tuesday, 05 April 2011   Category: Transport and utilities

More graduate jobs could be created in the purchasing and supply chain market, after the UK service sector witnessed accelerated growth in March.

That is to be inferred from the latest UK Services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) from Markit and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPD), which highlighted a significant rise in the amount of new business.

The PMI for March also witnessed the first monthly year-on-year rise in employment for nine months, while activity growth in the service sector surged to its highest position in more than a year.

Paul Smith, Markit senior economist, expressed his surprise at how strong services activity growth had been in 2011.

"Allied to a robust underlying growth trend in manufacturing and the recent improvement in construction, we look for gross domestic product in the Q1 to have rebounded by as much as 0.8 per cent on a quarterly basis in the first quarter," he said.
