Graduate jobs in services sector 'very important' to UK recovery

Published: Wednesday, 12 January 2011   Category: Career Advice

University-leavers looking for graduate jobs in the services sector may be pleased to know that a research group has called the employment area "very important" to the country's economic recovery.

The service sector - which includes the recent graduate schemes launched at Morrisons and the Arcadia Group - makes up two-thirds of the United Kingdom's economy.

Jonathan Loynes, chief European economist at Capital Economics, said that the sector is "always going to be very important".

"Within the services, obviously the consumer side of the economy has been doing well over the last decade but is probably not going to be doing quite so well over the next few years," Mr Loynes warned.

The British Chambers of Commerce this week highlighted the strength of the manufacturing industry in its latest quarter economic survey, in which it also revealed that the economy grew in the fourth quarter of 2010, but at a comparatively slower rate.
