Graduate jobs in retail come with rich rewards
Tuesday, 12 June 2007
Final-year students considering their work options have been advised to look towards the varied benefits involved in graduate jobs in retail.
The reputation of the high-street industry to offer competitive and rewarding careers has grown dramatically in recent years, and an estimated 4,000 people now begin graduate jobs in retail in the UK each year.
Speaking to the Independent, a number of leading business and employment experts have spoken out to explain some of the reasons that graduate jobs in retail are quickly gaining high esteem.
Susie Barker, graduate recruitment manager at high-street supermarket Waitrose, which offers around 40 new graduate jobs each year, told the paper.
"Retail, particularly food, is a very fast-changing environment, so no two days at work are ever the same."
Graduate jobs in retail are also seen as offering one of the fastest paths up the management and earnings ladder, with Ann Richardson, career strategy manager at skills council Skillsmart, commenting: "One of our key messages to students thinking of choosing retail as a career is how it provides the ability to earn a lot very quickly.
"Good graduates can be earning up to £35,000 and within five or six years, the best can be store managers earning £70,000."
